Leonid L. Topper, M.D. As one of New Jersey's leading experts on childhood seizure disorders and EEGs, Dr. Sandy Waran is an attending pediatric neurologist at Saint Clare's Hospital where he is the Medical Director of the Children's Neurology and Epilepsy Program based at Saint Clare's Hospital/Denville. He is responsible for the establishment of a regional pediatric neurology program at Morristown Memorial and Overlook Hospitals in 1978, were he served as the Chairman, Section of Pediatric Neurology in the Department of Neuroscience. Additionally, he introduced long-term video EEG monitoring to these hospitals. He has been listed in the Guide to America's Top Physicians by the Consumers Research Council of America. Dr. Waran served on the clinical faculty of Columbia Presbyterian University and UMDNJ, and is a pediatric neurologist certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with special competence in child neurology. Dr. Waran also completed a year of fellowship in clinical electroencephalography which earned him further board certification by the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology and enhances his expertise in the identification and treatment of patients with epilepsy. He has also participated in numerous television panels on Tourette's syndrome, epilepsy, and attention deficit disorders. Dr. Waran's contributions to pharmacological research have advanced the treatment of movement disorders and epilepsy in children, and he has also co-authored articles in such publications as Clinical Lessons in Epilepsy, The Journal of the Medical Society of New Jersey, Pediatric Neurology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Human Genetics. Dr. Trevor G. DeSouza, Associate Director, is a pediatric neurologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)/New Jersey Medical School. He is staff physician and the Associate Director of the Children's Neurology and Epilepsy Program at Saint Clare's Hospital/ Denville. Dr. DeSouza holds certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (child neurology) and the American Board of Pediatrics. Since 1998, he has been consistently listed among "The Best Doctors in America" in a survey conducted by Woodward/White, Inc. Dr. DeSouza completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric neurology at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He pursued additional sub-specialization in electromyography and neuromuscular diseases at the same institution. He is one of the few board-certified pediatric neurologists with this specialization in the state of New Jersey, and has authored numerous articles on this subject. He has established a Brachial Plexus Center and sees patients with Erb's palsy from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. This center provides ongoing evaluation for treatment and surgical consideration. Additionally, Dr. DeSouza has received intensive training in the use of innovative therapies, including BOTOX® injections (which have been shown to improve motor function in children with cerebral palsy). Dr. DeSouza is also trained in the programming of vagus nerve stimulators which can be used for intractable epilepsy and in electrodiagnostic testing. He has worked at the Headache and Epilepsy Centers at Montefiore Medical Center. He is associated with the Tourette's Syndrome Association and has treated several hundred patients with this disorder. Dr. DeSouza has also participated in medical research studies and has co-authored articles in publications such as Neurology, The Journal of Pediatrics, The Journal of NeuroOncology, The Annals of Neurology, and The American Journal of Medical Genetics. Dr. Topper joined the Pediatric Neurology Associates in October 2005. He comes from the Schneider Children's Hospital in New York where he served as a pediatric neurology attending of the Brain Tumor Program and Epilepsy service. As a neurologist of the Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Topper conducted weekly multi-specialty clinic for children and adults with various forms of brain cancer. Along with neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, and radiation therapy doctors, Dr. Topper actively participated in decision making regarding the best possible care for these children. Dr. Topper has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of children with seizures and epilepsy. For number of years he was responsible for the reading and interpretation of in-patient and out-patient video EEG monitoring tests, averaging about 450 tests a year. He also cared for large number of patients with headaches, brain infections, stroke, tics and Tourette syndrome, nerve and muscle conditions, autistic disorders, ADHD, and neonatal brain problems. Following his 5 years of general pediatric training, Dr. Topper completed 3 years of neurology and pediatric neurology fellowship at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. He is board certified in both pediatric and adult neurology. He serves as an examiner for the oral exams in pediatric neurology conducted by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Additionally, Dr. Topper is a member of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health in the United Kingdom. Teaching and medical publications are areas of his strong interests. Dr. Topper authored a number of teaching brochures for doctors in training, and composed an instructional compact disc explaining the techniques of neurological examination in infants and children. He conducted lecture series for general pediatricians, neurologists, and psychiatrists on various aspects of neurologic disorders in children. Dr. Topper has also co-authored articles in Pediatric Neurology and Headache journals.
