Overview of the Children's Neurology Center

The specialists at Children's Neurology Center are dedicated to the successful diagnosis and treatment of your child's neurological problems. With cumulative experience of over 40 years in pediatric neurology, our physicians, Drs. Sandy P. Waran,Trevor DeSouza, and Leonid Topper use state-of-the-art testing and treatment techniques to evaluate childhood language disorders, including learning and attention deficit disorders, developmental disorders, including autism, and headaches. The Center also specializes in childhood seizure disorders, tics, and Tourette's Syndrome.

Our center also has capabilities for EEGs, 24-hour EEGs, long-term monitoring (video EEGs), and electrodiagnosis (EMG) of neuromuscular disorders. With such an advanced and comprehensive scope of coordinated services at one location, children have the comfort of dealing with the same doctors and technicians, and parents spend less time coordinating testing and physicians appointments at several locations. Our pediatric neurologists work closely with many of the pediatricians and family physicians in your area and we participate in most managed care programs.

Our staff consists of individuals who are specially trained in serving children with neurological or developmental disorders. They include pediatric nurse practitioners, nurses, EEG technologists, and medical assistants.

In addition to the Children's Neurology Center, Dr. Waran heads the Children's Neurology and Epilepsy Program based at Saint Clare's Hospital/Denville. The program features a combination closed-circuit television and electroencephalogram (EEG) that allows doctors to monitor both the external appearance and brain wave activity of the child. Dr. Waran, the program's medical director, and Dr. DeSouza, the program's associate director, use this and other cutting-edge equipment and techniques to effectively diagnose pediatric neurological and epileptic disorders.

In addition to Saint Clare's, our physicians serve children at hospitals in northern New Jersey, including Goryeb Children's Hospital of Morristown Memorial, Overlook, and Saint Barnabas Hospitals, and maintain faculty positions and affiliations at major universities and leading teaching hospitals in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

Pediatric Neurology Overview

Neurology is the medical subspecialty that treats disorders of the nervous system. This includes diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Some of the more common problems that a neurologist will diagnose and treat are epilepsy (seizures), headaches, and ADHD with or without learning disabilities. Neurologists may serve as consultants to other physicians, while also providing long-term care to patients with chronic neurological disorders.
